Birmingham Candidate Selections PDF Print E-mail

With the election in mind, this weekend was a massive weekend for Birmingham Conservative preparations as no less than 6 candidates were selected for Birmingham seats. A major piece of news was that Cllr Robert Alden - a regular at City Branch events including last weekend's BBQ - was the first candidate selected. He will be standing for the eminently winnable seat of Erdington where he lives and is already a councillor. Cllr Colin Hughes is another City Brancher who was selected today. Colin was chosen for the important seat of Ladywood which covers central Birmingham. The other choices were Jo Barker for Hall Green, William Norton for Perry Barr, Meirion Jenkins for Yardley and Shailesh Parekh for Hodge Hill. I am sure all candidates would love to hear from you if you think you can help with their campaigns in any way.

  1. Robert Alden has been adopted for Birmingham Erdington - Projected Labour majority of 9,654
  2. Jo Barker for Birmingham Hall Green - Projected Labour majority of 4,191 over the Liberal Democrats
  3. William Norton for Perry Barr - Projected Labour majority of 7,589 over the Liberal Democrats
  4. Meirion Jenkins for Birmingham Yardley - Projected Liberal Democrat majority of 2,121 over Labour
  5. Colin Hughes for Birmingham Ladywood - Projected Labour majority of 6,215 over the Liberal Democrats
  6. Shailesh Parekh for Birmingham Hodge Hill - Projected Labour majority of 10,175 over the Liberal Democrats

10-2-1 with Cllr Peter Smallbone PDF Print E-mail
Every month, City Branch asks leading Birmingham Conservatives 10 frank questions.

In February 2009, we spoke to Cllr Peter Smallbone (a former Chairman of the City Branch) who was elected a Councillor for Quinton in May 2008:

1. Cllr Smallbone, what do you do in the real world?

I’m an IT consultant for a firm based in Coventry. I work with companies to deliver IT solutions that enable, rather than constrain, their businesses.

2. When did you first get involved with the Conservative Party?

I helped out during my school’s mock election that mirrored the general election in 1992, but due to the demands of my job I wasn’t actively involved again until a few years ago. But this just goes to show that you don’t need a long pedigree of Party involvement to stand for election or to make a difference. You just need to work hard and believe in what you’re doing.

3. Why are you a Conservative?

I believe in keeping the state as small as possible, individual liberty, the market economy, the importance of family, the rule of law and national self-determination. I guess I believe that if you leave people, families and nations free to choose their own destinies and to go about their business without restraint, you’ll get the best out of them.

4. What is the best thing about Birmingham?

Aston Villa.

5. What is your favourite restaurant in the City centre?

I like Chez Jules on Ethel Street, off New Street. The food’s very good and it’s not too expensive.

6. What would you describe as your worst vice?

Playing Wii Bowling too much.

7. If you could have any job in the world what would it be?

Government IT supremo..

8. What is your greatest political success to date?

It has to be last May, when I was elected as a councillor for Quinton, in Birmingham Edgbaston constituency. Labour was desperate to stop us, as all twelve councillors in the constituency would then be Conservatives. We put out thousands of leaflets, I knocked on hundreds of doors and we were successful in taking the seat. I was proud that our message remained overwhelmingly positive throughout the campaign. Anyone who’s been through the process will tell you that it’s a great moment when the returning officer reads out your name. ;

9. Who is your political hero?

Hereward The Wake. Although most of the stuff you learnt about him in school was probably made up, the guy’s still a legend.

10. How would you describe yourself?

My own biggest critic. Also I’m taller than most people think.

10-2-1 with Tim Crockford PDF Print E-mail
Every month, City Branch asks leading Birmingham Conservatives 10 frank questions.

In Januray 2009, we spoke to Tim Crockford (the outgoing Chairman of the City Branch and the National Deputy Chairman of the Tory Reform Group )

1. Mr Crockford, what do you do in the real world?

I am a trainee solicitor at Wragge & Co LLP and from March 2009 I will be seconded to work as a lawyer at Mercedes-Benz.

2. When did you first get involved with the Conservative Party?

I joined the Faversham and Mid Kent Conservative Party back in 1998 just before I started my A-levels.

3. Why are you a Conservative?

I believe in giving people opportunities. I was lucky enough to go to a local grammar school in Kent. I was taught that if you worked hard and applied yourself you could achieve anything and be socially mobile. That idea is at the core of conservatism. There is a horrible phrase "Give people a hand up, not a hand out" - I always found it hard to argue with though. Human endeavour is limitless when people are properly motivated and opportunities exist.

4. What is the best thing about Birmingham?

City Branch of course!

5. What is your favourite restaurant in the City centre?

Well probably San Carlo but honestly I seem to have spent most time at Cafe Rouge in the Mailbox. I love the view down the canal first the thing in the morning over breakfast with my girlfriend on a Sunday!

6. What would you describe as your worst vice?

My girlfriend tells me that it is that I have papers everywhere - I like to think it is organised chaos!

7. If you could have any job in the world what would it be?

Non-political - it must be a SCUBA diving instructor on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia..

8. What is your greatest political success to date?

I have no idea I have been very lucky to have been involved in fantastic Party successes since I became involved in our Party in Kent, London and Birmingham. I have had the opportunity to work with some fantastic people and have learnt that political successes are always the results of a great team. However my funniest political moment was nearly being elected a Councillor in Kent accidentally when I tried to be too clever for my own good. I was Campaign Manager in Shepway in Kent and had orchestrated our first local Council victory back in 2002. The next year the Labour Party were ready for us and so I thought we would put me up as a candidate in the most hopeless seat in the area and then put out the most provocative leaflet possible highlighting Labour failures. The Labour Councillors were furious with the leaflet - the Labour Party moved all their efforts out of the seat we were targeting and attacked me! It was a great success and we won the seat we wanted. Unfortunately I was told half way through election night that I was neck on neck with the Labour Party and was likely to win the seat. I was at the time a student living most of the year at University and so was terrified! In the end I lost by about a dozen votes and did not ask for a recount!! ;

9. Who is your political hero?

Benjamin Disraeli - the architect of Modern Conservatism and the first to call for One Nation (what today might be called social justice and compassionate conservatism). One of the greatest thinkers our Party has ever known.

10. How would you describe yourself?

A hopeless optimist.
